Post-Operative Visits*

It is important to continue to see the Surgeon for regular appointments after any bariatric surgery.** There are several reasons for this. First, early post-operative problems such as wound infections are best detected by physical examination at the time of the first post-operative appointment. It is also important to give the patient guidance on his or her diet after surgery. Reinforcing the proper way to eat can avoid negative symptoms and frustrations that can occur. Finally, screening for long term problems, such as vitamin / mineral deficiency (or evidence of bypass prolapse) should be done at regular intervals.

We recommend post-operative appointments as follows:

  • 1 week
  • 1 month – First Adjustment
  • 3 months – Second Adjustment
  • Every 2-6 Months – Depending on the need for Adjustments
  • 1 year
  • Then yearly

Beginning 1 year after surgery, and yearly thereafter, blood tests should be drawn the week before the appointment, so they will be available for review when the patient comes in. Routine labs are:

  • complete blood count
  • serum electrolytes with creatinine and glucose
  • iron, iron saturation, TIBC, ferritin
  • vitamin B1
  • vitamin B12
  • folic acid
  • ionized calcium and PTH levels

Any problems that are detected may require treatment and more frequent office visits to ensure a cure. Dr. Marvin believes that providing long-term follow up is essential to ensuring the best outcomes for his patients. We work together in a mutual Patient-Physician relationship to achieve these goals.
