Folic Acid Deficiency*

This is the least common of the recognized vitamin deficiencies after gastric bypass surgery. It occurs in fewer than 1% of the patients. It should be treated for several months with an oral replacement therapy. We suggest that the standard multivitamin taken after gastric bypass be one that contains folic acid. Folic acid is a main ingredient of any vitamin formulation that is considered “prenatal.”
